Nashville's Music Census Breaks Records, Reveals Parking Woes

The Greater Nashville Music Census has unveiled its initial findings, showcasing a remarkable level of participation and shedding light on the challenges facing the city's vibrant music industry. The census, launched in March and concluded in April, has set a new national record for city-wide participation, with over 4,000 individuals contributing their insights and concerns.

Uncovering the Pulse of Music City

Record-Breaking Participation

The Greater Nashville Music Census has made a significant impact, surpassing the previous record held by Austin, Texas. With 4,265 participants, the census has provided a comprehensive snapshot of the city's music landscape, offering valuable data and insights to guide future decision-making.

Dominating Key Metrics

In addition to the record-breaking overall participation, the census has also revealed Nashville's dominance in several key categories. The city leads in the percentage of individuals working in the music industry, the average income earned from music, the average annual events per venue, and the total annual events.

Voicing Concerns

Participants in the census were given the opportunity to share their main concerns, and the initial analysis has highlighted a pressing issue – the impact of parking costs and policies on the city's music industry. Respondents voiced their frustrations with expensive private lots and garages, as well as new street parking policies that they believe actively work against musicians, venues, and fans.

Addressing Parking Challenges

Chris Cobb, the Board President of the Music Venue Alliance Nashville, emphasized the importance of finding solutions to these parking issues. He acknowledged that downtown Nashville must become more friendly to the music community and local fans, and addressing the parking concerns is a crucial step in achieving this goal.

Preparing for the Full Reveal

The census team is currently sifting through thousands of survey entries and stories, preparing to unveil the full findings in early September. This upcoming event will showcase a new data dashboard, accompanied by video and infographics, providing a comprehensive overview of the census results.

Community Engagement and Collaboration

The success of the Greater Nashville Music Census has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of various partners, including the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, the Music Venue Alliance of Nashville, Visit Music City, CMA, AMA, the Tennessee Entertainment Commission, and over 100 other community engagement partners.
