Empowering Summer Learning: CMS Equips Students for Academic Success

As the summer break winds down, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) is taking proactive steps to ensure students are prepared to bounce back when they return to the classroom. Recognizing the potential setbacks caused by summer learning loss, the district is leveraging innovative tools to keep kids engaged and on track throughout the year.

Bridging the Summer Learning Gap with Engaging Virtual Packets

Maintaining Momentum Through Summer Learning

CMS leaders understand the significant impact that summer learning loss can have on a student's academic progress. Data from Learner shows that students affected by this phenomenon can lag behind their peers by as much as 2 1/2 to 3 years. To combat this challenge, the district has introduced a virtual summer packet that allows students to continue their learning journey from anywhere, at any time. The virtual packets are designed to keep kids engaged and on track, introducing them to new material ahead of the upcoming school year. "A kid that reads over the summer is going to always have an advantage over those that do not," explains CMS teacher Teddi Ruddy. "We know that kids love technology, and we know that it is a great way to get them involved if we use it in a great way."

Empowering Parents and Students for a Smoother Transition

The virtual summer packets have been a game-changer for families like Eleni Amoroso's. Amoroso, a CMS parent, has seen a significant difference in her daughter, Natalia, since starting the packets. "My daughter's biggest struggle was reading and math. The longer you're out of school, the harder it is to get back into it," Amoroso shared. However, after engaging with the virtual resources, Natalia is now eager to take on the challenges of fourth grade.Amoroso believes the transition process into the next grade level is much smoother when students can maintain their academic momentum over the summer. "The transition process going into the next grade is smoother than struggling, trying to play catch up," she said.

Embracing Technology to Enhance Summer Learning

CMS is leveraging the power of technology to make summer learning more accessible and engaging for students. The virtual packets not only allow kids to stay on track but also introduce them to new material, preparing them for the upcoming school year."We know that kids love technology, and we know that it is a great way to get them involved if we use it in a great way," Ruddy emphasized. By tapping into students' natural affinity for digital tools, CMS is creating a learning experience that is both effective and enjoyable. As the new school year approaches, CMS is encouraging families to take advantage of the summer packets and ensure their children are ready to hit the ground running. With these innovative resources, the district is confident that more students will be prepared to bounce back and thrive when they return to the classroom.
