Data from Learner shows that students affected by this phenomenon can lag behind their peers by as much as 2 1/2 to 3 years. To combat this challenge, the district has introduced a virtual summer packet that allows students to continue their learning journey from anywhere, at any time.The virtual packets are designed to keep kids engaged and on track, introducing them to new material ahead of the upcoming school year. "A kid that reads over the summer is going to always have an advantage over those that do not," explains CMS teacher Teddi Ruddy. "We know that kids love technology, and we know that it is a great way to get them involved if we use it in a great way."

The virtual summer packets have been a game-changer for families like Eleni Amoroso's. Amoroso, a CMS parent, has seen a significant difference in her daughter, Natalia, since starting the packets. "My daughter's biggest struggle was reading and math. The longer you're out of school, the harder it is to get back into it," Amoroso shared. However, after engaging with the virtual resources, Natalia is now eager to take on the challenges of fourth grade.Amoroso believes the transition process into the next grade level is much smoother when students can maintain their academic momentum over the summer. "The transition process going into the next grade is smoother than struggling, trying to play catch up," she said.
