Feeding Michigan's Children: A Summer Lifeline

As the school year winds down, nearly 900,000 Michigan children can look forward to a new summer food assistance program that aims to ensure they don't go hungry during the break. The Michigan Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) program will provide eligible families with 0 per child, a crucial lifeline for those who rely on school-based meals throughout the academic calendar.

Ensuring No Child Goes Hungry This Summer

Addressing a Critical Need

Many Michigan children depend on the breakfast and lunch provided at their schools during the school year. With schools on break, the state recognized the need to step in and fill this gap. The new Michigan Summer EBT program is designed to address food insecurity for students, building on similar efforts implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic."Many Michigan children rely on breakfast and lunch provided at their school during the school year, and we want to make sure they do not go hungry this summer while schools are on break," said Elizabeth Hertel, director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Eligibility Criteria

The Michigan Summer EBT program is open to a wide range of eligible households. Children between the ages of 6 and 18 who receive aid from the Food Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, or are part of eligible Medical Assistance households at or below 185% of the federal poverty level, are all eligible to receive the 0 per child benefit.Additionally, students of any age who are certified as eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch through the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program can also apply for the Summer EBT assistance.

Expanding Access and Awareness

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is actively working to ensure that all eligible families are aware of the Summer EBT program and can easily access the benefits. The department is collaborating with schools, community organizations, and local leaders to spread the word and encourage families to apply.By making the application process straightforward and accessible, the state aims to reach as many families in need as possible. This comprehensive approach is crucial in ensuring that no child in Michigan goes hungry during the summer months.

Empowering Families and Communities

The Michigan Summer EBT program not only provides much-needed financial support to families but also empowers them to make informed decisions about their children's nutrition. The 0 per child benefit can be used to purchase a variety of healthy food options, allowing parents and guardians to tailor their children's diets to their specific needs and preferences. This flexibility and choice are particularly important for families who may face unique dietary requirements or cultural preferences. By putting the power in the hands of the families, the program fosters a sense of agency and self-determination, ultimately strengthening the overall well-being of Michigan's communities.

Investing in the Future

The Michigan Summer EBT program is more than just a temporary solution to address immediate hunger needs. It represents a long-term investment in the health and well-being of the state's children. By ensuring that no child goes without access to nutritious meals during the summer, the program lays the foundation for academic success, physical development, and overall resilience. This investment in the future of Michigan's youth has far-reaching implications. Healthy, well-nourished children are more likely to thrive in school, engage in extracurricular activities, and develop into productive, contributing members of society. The ripple effects of the Summer EBT program can be felt across the state, strengthening communities and shaping the next generation of Michiganders.
