Governor Gianforte Launches 4th State Agency Food Drive on 5th Day of Giving
In a spirit of giving and community support, the Governor's Office has once again launched the highly anticipated fourth annual state agency food drive competition. This initiative aims to make a significant impact on ending hunger in Montana and bringing assistance to those in need.

Join the Fight Against Hunger with the State Agency Food Drive

Governor's Initiative and Its Significance

December 2024 marks the fifth day of the Governor's 12 Days of Giving campaign. Governor Gianforte's announcement of this year's food drive competition showcases his commitment to addressing food insecurity in the state. By working together, state agencies and Montanans can make a real difference in the lives of their neighbors. This competition not only encourages donations but also promotes a sense of unity and community spirit. It serves as a reminder that we all have a role to play in ensuring that no one goes hungry.

Partnerships and Impact

The interagency food drive will run through December 20, building on the success of last year's event. Last year, state employees demonstrated their generosity by donating over 4,500 pounds of food. The Montana Department of Administration emerged as the winner, highlighting the collective effort of state agencies.Since 1983, the Montana Food Bank Network (MFBN) has been at the forefront of fighting hunger in the state. With a network of over 330 community partners, MFBN distributes over 16 million pounds of food annually to 56 counties. Their work is crucial in providing nourishment to those facing food insecurity.

Challenges and the Need for Support

Access to affordable and nutritious food remains a challenge for many Montanans. Half of the counties in the state are food deserts, with long distances to the nearest grocery store. Coupled with the high cost of living, households often rely on public assistance programs, food banks, and pantries to make ends meet.During the holiday season and throughout the year, individuals can contribute by holding community food drives, volunteering at local pantries, or making donations to the Montana Food Bank Network. Every little bit helps in providing meals for those in need.According to MFBN, a donation can provide at least 4 meals. This highlights the impact that even small donations can have on the lives of Montanans.

Most Needed Food Items

The network has identified several most needed food items, including canned tuna or meat, peanut butter, canned soup, canned beans, canned vegetables, oatmeal, Hunt's tomato sauce, cooking oil, low-fat salad dressings, canned chili, pasta, brown rice, and shelf-stable milk. By donating these items, individuals can directly contribute to meeting the immediate food needs of those in the community.

How to Get Involved

For more information on how to help end hunger in Montana, Montanans can visit mfbn.org. This website provides detailed information on donation drives, volunteer opportunities, and ways to get involved in the fight against hunger.Throughout the 12 Days of Giving campaign, the governor has been highlighting the work of a dozen organizations serving Montanans in need. By supporting these organizations and participating in the food drive, individuals can make a lasting impact on the lives of their fellow Montanans. The fourth annual 12 Days of Giving campaign is a testament to the Governor's dedication to social causes and community well-being. It serves as a reminder that we have the power to create positive change and make a difference in the lives of those around us.
