Food bank ramps up operations for Hunger Action Month

Combating Hunger: A Nationwide Call to Action

Since 2008, September has marked Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness and drive action against the critical issue of food insecurity. Across the country, employees and volunteers at food pantries don the color orange to signify their commitment to this important cause.

Empowering Communities to Nourish the Hungry

Addressing the Seasonal Challenges of Food Banks

Marijo Martinec, the executive director and CEO of the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, sheds light on the unique challenges food banks face during the summer months. "Summertime is particularly difficult for food banks," Martinec explains. "The need for food often increases when children are out of school and people may have seasonal jobs, but donations usually drop." This seasonal fluctuation in supply and demand underscores the importance of consistent community support throughout the year.

Maximizing the Impact of Monetary Donations

While non-perishable food donations are vital, Martinec emphasizes the additional benefits of monetary contributions. "We can stretch a dollar further," she says. "By collaborating with partners and working with large food brokers, a one-dollar donation can provide up to five meals or eight pounds of food." This strategic approach to resource allocation allows food banks to amplify the impact of every donation, ensuring that every contribution makes a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

Diversifying Volunteer Opportunities

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana recognizes the value of a diverse volunteer base, not just those who collect donations. "We offer opportunities for behind-the-scenes help," Martinec says. "If you have handyman skills, we welcome those types of volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to get involved and make a meaningful impact." By providing a range of volunteer roles, the food bank taps into the unique talents and abilities of community members, empowering them to contribute in ways that align with their strengths and interests.

Envisioning a Hunger-Free Future

The ultimate goal of Hunger Action Month is to work towards a future where no one goes hungry. "Every action we take can help end hunger," Martinec affirms. "One day, I would love to be out of a job. I wish we didn't need food banks and food pantries to feed people. Every action brings us one step closer to a community where no one goes hungry." This inspiring vision of a hunger-free society serves as a powerful motivator, driving individuals and organizations to take meaningful steps towards this collective goal.
