Suda51: “Everyone cares too much about Metacritic scores”

Embracing Creativity: Suda51 and Mikami Challenge the Tyranny of Metacritic

In a candid interview, industry veterans Goichi 'Suda51' Suda and Shinji Mikami shed light on the challenges faced by developers who dare to stray from the beaten path. Suda, the creator of the acclaimed No More Heroes series, believes that the gaming industry's obsession with Metacritic scores is stifling creativity and diversity. Mikami, a legendary figure in his own right, echoes these sentiments, highlighting the difficulties faced by "less conventional" titles in a market dominated by big-budget blockbusters.

Defying the Metacritic Mindset: Suda51's Perspective

Suda51, the visionary behind some of the most unique and unconventional games in the industry, is not one to mince words when it comes to the industry's reliance on Metacritic scores. "Everybody pays too much attention to and cares too much about Metacritic scores," he laments. "It's gotten to the point where there's almost a set formula – if you want to get a high Metacritic score, this is how you make the game."According to Suda51, this obsession with Metacritic has created a narrow definition of what constitutes a "successful" game. "If you've got a game that doesn't fit into that formula, that marketability scope, it loses points on Metacritic. The bigger companies might not want to deal with that kind of thing." He believes that this focus on numbers has come at the expense of creativity and innovation, as developers feel compelled to conform to a predetermined set of criteria.

Embracing the Unconventional

Suda51's approach to game development is a refreshing contrast to the Metacritic-driven mindset. "Personally, I don't care too much about the Metacritic numbers. I'm not really conscious of them. What's important to us is putting the games out that we want to put out and having people playing the games we want them to be able to play."This unwavering commitment to his artistic vision has led Suda51 to create some of the most distinctive and memorable games in the industry. From the stylized action of the No More Heroes series to the surreal and darkly comedic Shadows of the Damned, his games defy conventional expectations and challenge players to embrace the unconventional.

The Sting of Zero

While Suda51 may not be overly concerned with Metacritic scores, he admits that the occasional low review can sting. "Sometimes a media outlet has given us zero. That makes me feel shitty – why go that far and give us zero?" he laughs. "But apart from that I try to avoid Metacritic."This acknowledgment of the emotional impact of critical reception underscores the delicate balance that developers must strike between staying true to their creative vision and navigating the often harsh landscape of public opinion. For Suda51, the pursuit of artistic integrity remains the driving force, even in the face of unfavorable reviews.

Mikami's Perspective: Unique Games Struggle for Attention

Shinji Mikami, Suda51's fellow Japanese gaming legend and the creator of the Resident Evil series, echoes his colleague's concerns about the industry's focus on Metacritic and big-budget marketing. "The kind of games that get the most marketing support are the ones that need to appeal to as broad an audience as possible," he observes. "More unique games don't really have the same marketability."Mikami believes that there are plenty of innovative and unconventional titles out there, but they often struggle to gain the same level of attention and recognition as their more mainstream counterparts. "There are plenty of less conventional titles out there, but they get less attention because of all the big budget games that are out there and all the power that's put into the marketing for them."

Navigating the Challenges of Creativity

For Suda51 and Mikami, the path to creating truly distinctive games is fraught with challenges, from the industry's obsession with Metacritic scores to the dominance of big-budget marketing campaigns. Yet, they remain steadfast in their commitment to pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the medium.By embracing their unique creative visions and refusing to be beholden to the dictates of the Metacritic-driven status quo, Suda51 and Mikami are paving the way for a more diverse and vibrant gaming landscape. Their unwavering dedication to their craft serves as an inspiration to developers who dare to defy convention and explore the untapped potential of the medium. As the industry continues to grapple with the tension between commercial success and artistic expression, the voices of Suda51 and Mikami stand as a powerful reminder that true innovation and creativity can thrive, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
