Rich nations should provide climate finance to developing countries: Bhupender Yadav

Developed Nations Must Lead the Climate Finance Charge

Developed countries that have historically contributed the most to carbon emissions must take responsibility and provide financial support to developing nations to address the climate crisis, according to Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. As the world approaches the deadline to agree on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) - the new annual climate finance target for developed countries starting in 2025 - the issue of climate finance will be at the forefront of the upcoming UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Bridging the Climate Finance Gap for Equitable Global Growth

Shared Responsibility for a Global Problem

The climate crisis is a global issue that requires a coordinated international response. As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports have clearly stated, the rise in global temperatures is driven by the increase in carbon emissions worldwide. While countries have developed their own Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to address climate change, India has already achieved its climate targets in areas like renewable energy and emissions reduction.

Developed Nations Must Lead on Climate Finance

Yadav emphasized that for the world to achieve equitable growth, developed countries must provide the necessary financial and technological support to developing nations. Unfortunately, this has not happened to the desired extent, and the NCQG will be a central focus of the upcoming COP29 in Baku. Yadav called on the countries historically responsible for the majority of carbon emissions to step up and take the lead in providing climate finance.

The Urgency of Climate Action

With the Earth's global surface temperature already 1.15 degrees Celsius above the 1850-1900 average, climate scientists warn that countries must take urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 43% by 2030 (compared to 2019 levels) to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Developing nations argue that they cannot be expected to reduce emissions faster without enhanced financial support from developed countries, which have historically contributed the most to climate change.

The Escalating Climate Finance Demands

The current climate finance target of 0 billion per year is widely seen as insufficient to address the scale of the climate challenge. Developing countries are now demanding trillions of dollars to tackle the crisis, underscoring the need for a significant increase in climate finance from developed nations. As the world prepares for the critical COP29 conference, the spotlight will be on the ability of developed countries to step up and provide the necessary financial resources to support climate action in the Global South.
