Salt Lake City formally awarded 2034 Olympic Games

Salt Lake City Secures 2034 Winter Olympics Amid Geopolitical Tensions

Salt Lake City has been selected to host the 2034 Winter Olympics, marking the city's return to the global sporting stage after hosting the 2002 Games. However, the announcement was not without controversy, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has inserted a clause in the host city contract that requires local officials to work with the U.S. government to address concerns about a federal investigation into suspected doping by Chinese swimmers.

Securing the Winter Games Amid Geopolitical Challenges

A Coveted Opportunity for Salt Lake City

The selection of Salt Lake City as the host of the 2034 Winter Olympics is a significant achievement for the city and the state of Utah. After successfully hosting the 2002 Games, which were marked by tight security in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, Salt Lake City has once again emerged as the preferred destination for the IOC. The city's bid was the only one under consideration, as the IOC had granted it exclusive negotiating rights last year, fast-tracking the process for 2034.The campaign team presenting the bid to the IOC members included Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, and renowned Alpine skier Lindsey Vonn. Back home, a public watch party at 3 a.m. local time gathered to witness the announcement from Paris.

Geopolitical Tensions and the IOC's Demands

However, the IOC's decision to award the 2034 Winter Games to Salt Lake City was not without its complications. Before the vote, Governor Cox agreed to a set of pledges demanded by IOC leaders, including a clause in the host city contract that requires local officials to work with current and future U.S. presidents and members of Congress to "alleviate your concerns" about a federal investigation into doping. The IOC's move appears to be a response to the FBI's investigation into the World Anti-Doping Agency's (WADA) decision to accept China's explanations for positive drug tests of 23 swimmers before the Tokyo Olympics. The IOC has secured promises from U.S. Olympic officials and the Utah contingent to accept a new clause that allows the Olympic body to terminate Salt Lake City's deal if the authority of WADA is undermined. This unprecedented action by the IOC has been interpreted as a message to the FBI to back away from the Chinese swimmers' case, which can be investigated in the U.S. under federal legislation named after a whistleblower of Russian state doping at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.

Navigating the Political Landscape

Governor Cox acknowledged the political challenges, stating, "We will work with our members of Congress, we will use all the levers of power open to us to resolve these concerns." The IOC's demands and the ongoing federal investigation have added an additional layer of complexity to Salt Lake City's preparations for the 2034 Winter Olympics.Despite these geopolitical tensions, Salt Lake City's bid was ultimately approved by an 83-6 vote of the IOC members, bringing the Winter Games back to the city 32 years after it first hosted them in 2002. The 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games are remembered for the bid bribery scandal that emerged in 1998, leading to sweeping anti-corruption reforms at the IOC.

A Longer Runway for Preparation

For its second turn as a Winter Olympics host, Salt Lake City will have almost 10 full years to prepare, the longest lead-in for a modern Winter Games. This extended timeline is particularly important given the longer-term concerns about climate change affecting snow sports and reducing the pool of potential hosts.By targeting 2034, Salt Lake City has also avoided potential commercial and logistical clashes with the 2028 Summer Games, which will be hosted by Los Angeles.

The 2030 Winter Games: A Separate Decision

In a separate decision, the IOC awarded the 2030 Winter Games to France, with conditions. The project will be a regional effort, split between ski resorts in the Alps and the French Riviera city of Nice. However, this decision still requires official signoff from the national government being formed and the Prime Minister yet to be confirmed, following recent elections called by President Emmanuel Macron.
