Cracking Down on Toll Evasion: New York's Relentless Fight Against Ghost Plates and Unpaid Fees

In a sweeping crackdown on toll evasion, New York law enforcement agencies have intensified their efforts to hold scofflaws accountable. From impounding vehicles to issuing thousands of summonses, the state is sending a clear message: the days of unchecked lawlessness on its bridges and tunnels are over.

Restoring Fairness and Funding the Future of New York's Transit System

Impounding Vehicles and Arresting Offenders

On a single day, law enforcement agencies impounded 55 vehicles and arrested 13 people at the Whitestone Bridge, while issuing more than 400 summonses. This was just one of the many joint enforcement operations targeting ghost plates and persistent toll violators across New York City. Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that these heightened efforts have led to the impoundment of 1,540 vehicles, 339 arrests, and the issuance of 12,007 summonses so far this year, with offenders owing more than .5 million in unpaid tolls and fees. The crackdown has yielded some significant arrests, including the discovery of a large quantity of narcotics and a loaded firearm during an operation at the Triboro Bridge. In another incident at the Queens Midtown Tunnel, a moped rider was found to have a suspended license and a substantial quantity of crack cocaine, with the individual also being a person of interest in a Brooklyn shooting.

Sending a Clear Message: Lawlessness Will Not Be Tolerated

MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber emphasized the importance of these enforcement actions, stating that "Toll-dodging drivers cost the MTA millions of dollars every year." He warned that those who attempt to evade tolls or use fake plates will "pay the price." NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban echoed this sentiment, declaring that the joint task force operations have made it clear that "lawlessness is simply not tolerated here."The crackdown has been a collaborative effort, with the NYPD, MTA Bridge and Tunnel officers, and other law enforcement partners working together to hold offenders accountable. Port Authority Police Superintendent Edward Cetnar praised the "unified strength of the region's law enforcement," stating that the message to those who try to deceive the system is clear: "We are vigilant, we are prepared and, like thousands before you, we will hold you accountable for breaking the law."

Protecting the Public's Money and Investing in the Future

Governor Hochul emphasized the significant financial impact of toll evasion, stating that it "cost our state millions each year and impede our efforts to build a mass transit system that benefits everyone." The recovered funds from these enforcement actions can be reinvested into modernizing and improving New York's transit infrastructure, ultimately benefiting the public. The relentless pursuit of toll evaders is not just about restoring fairness and accountability; it's about safeguarding the future of New York's transportation network. By cracking down on this persistent issue, the state is ensuring that the public's money is used to enhance the services and infrastructure that millions of New Yorkers rely on every day.
