The centerpiece of this opulent experience was the dining car, where passengers were treated to a veritable feast of oysters, chicken chasseur, turbot with green sauce, and much more.The dining car was a triumph of logistics and engineering, as the very idea of preparing and serving hot meals on a moving train was once considered almost unthinkable. The menu was so extravagant that a portion of the baggage car had to be repurposed to accommodate an extra icebox for the food and alcohol. Served by impeccably dressed waiters, the passengers dined in an atmosphere of pure elegance, sipping from crystal goblets and eating from fine porcelain using silver cutlery. The Birth of the Dining Car: A Triumph of Logistics

In 1865, engineer and industrialist George Pullman ushered in a new era of comfort with his Pullman sleepers, or "palace cars," and then launched the "hotel on wheels," called the President, two years later. During this time, Wagons-Lits' routes expanded into North Africa and the Middle East, and state-of-the-art metal cars replaced the old wooden ones. Celebrated artists and designers were commissioned to decorate the cars, including the palatial dining ones.The pinnacle of on-board luxury during this era was the introduction of the Pullman lounges, which allowed passengers to be served food directly to their comfortable, winged chairs with headrests. These cars, designed by decorator René Prou and master glassmaker René Lalique, featured elegant marquetry, molded glass panels, and even transformed luggage racks into "gems of Art Deco."

The Decline of the Dining Car: Convenience over Comfort

The post-World War II era brought significant changes to the way railroads and passengers operated. Trains became faster, reducing the spare time that travelers had to enjoy the dining car experience. The rise of commercial air travel and an explosion in personal car ownership across Europe in the 1950s meant that trains were no longer considered the most luxurious way to travel.The economics of food production also evolved, with Wagons-Lits opening a new, modern industrial kitchen in 1956 that could prepare meals for all trains departing Paris.
