For Button, the program's impact extends far beyond the classroom. As a retired teacher, he fondly recalls the memories he's created with his students, particularly through the restoration of his beloved 1959 Corvette. "When I retired, I didn't know that I had the best job in the whole world," he reflects, his voice brimming with pride. The car, which has become a centerpiece of the annual car show, serves as a testament to the program's ability to forge lasting connections and inspire a love for the automotive industry.
Potts, the new auto instructor, is a testament to the program's enduring influence. As a former student of Button's, he now carries on the legacy, passing on his knowledge and passion to the next generation. "It's just watching the kids. Trying to teach them, and then they get it," he says, his eyes lighting up with excitement. "I've got a bunch of kids this summer I've seen pop up on Facebook; they're swapping a frame, and there are 8 or 9 of them working together. They're making friends from 2 or 3 different schools, it's just stuff like that."
For Potts, this aspect of the program is particularly meaningful. "All the funds we collect here, we save those and give a scholarship to the students. They can either buy tools or put it towards education," he explains, underscoring the program's commitment to empowering its students and ensuring their success.
The car show itself is a testament to the community's support and enthusiasm for the program. Visitors from near and far flock to the event, captivated by the stunning array of classic and custom vehicles on display. From the iconic 1959 Corvette to the sleek modern sports cars, each vehicle tells a story, sparking memories and igniting the imagination of the next generation of automotive enthusiasts.
For many students, the program serves as a gateway to a fulfilling career in the automotive industry. Whether they choose to pursue a path as a mechanic, an engineer, or a designer, the skills and knowledge they gain at St. Johns High School give them a competitive edge in the job market. The program's emphasis on practical, real-world applications ensures that students are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the modern automotive landscape.
But the program's impact extends beyond just career preparation. It also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among the students. As Potts observed, the students often form lasting friendships and support networks, working together to tackle complex projects and share their passion for all things automotive.
As the annual car show continues to draw crowds and raise funds for scholarships, the true impact of the program can be seen in the lives it has transformed. From the students who have gone on to pursue successful careers in the automotive field to the community members who have been inspired by the program's dedication and passion, the St. Johns High School Auto Program is a shining example of how education can drive change and shape the future.
As the engines roar and the wheels spin, the St. Johns High School Auto Program stands as a testament to the power of hands-on learning, community support, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. It is a program that not only preserves the rich history of the automotive industry but also paves the way for a new generation of innovators and leaders, ready to take the wheel and steer the future of transportation.
